Khanbulan Lake Hiking Route

Khanbulan Lake Hiking Route

Khanbulan Lake is a water reservoir in the south of the country, in Lankaran region. It is a beautiful lake surrounded with forests that are part of Hirkan national park.

The lake is 4.7 km long and 2.2 km wide. It looks pretty in almost all seasons. There is classic way to go to the lake by car as the road to Astara passes by this lake. Traditional tourism agencies bring their customers this way. As an outdoor tour agency, we have a unique route in nature, where czech style hiking signs are used on the trees by the national park.

In order to start to our hiking along this route we stop on the way to the lake in one of the entrances of the park from where we enter the national park. The uniqueness of this route is that it is all the way through the forest and it gives you a feeling in some parts like you are walking in dense Amazon forests.

I should also emphasize that it is one of the challenging routes in terms of following the signs on the trees and you can easily get lost or lose your direction. Therefore, if you are not experienced enough you should better find a guide or go with a tour.

Hirkan forests are full of rare kind of trees including damiragac tree. There are many tall trees here and density makes air too humid in hot days keeping the wind outside.

In cooler days it is just fun to hike here discovering the hidden beauty of Hirkan forests. On our way we ascend a hill with a view of Lankaran region and Caspian sea. Later we have another view of villages of Lankaran from another hill.

Our hiking trail lasts for 2-2.5 hours through the forest until we reach the lake.

Total distance for this part is around 4-5 km. We stop for lunch and rest by the lake. You also get time here to walk around and discover the nature and lake along the coast. After relaxing time, we start the last and short part for about 30 minutes or for 1-2 km through the forest to another direction from where we exit the park and get to the road.

We usually get in our bus and go to the classic side of the lake as well where we have tea.

There come many people usually in summer months and there are several swings around to go back to your childhood. We drink tea here and have a talk. At the end of the day we get in our bus and head back to the capital.
